SOLUTIONS TO THE LAST LOGIC PUZZLE!

The last logic puzzle was posted on Jan. 7th--"Fishing Vacation Plans". Here is the solution:
Considerations:
From statements 1,3,6 and 7, Barrott’s first name is neither Andy,Bill, Carl, nor Dennis. Therefore, one of these four statements is the false one.
From statement 5, Barrott was one of the two who are not married. This is contradictory to statement 3. Therefore, statement 3 is false.

Therefore, Barrott;s first name is Carl. From statements 4 and 6, Dennis is not Whelan or Crowley. Therefore, Dennis is Cole.

From statements 4,6 and 7 ,Whelan’s favourite destination was the third. Crowley’s was the last, and Barrott’s was the first. Therefore, Cole’s favourite destinationwas the second one.

Our conclusions so far are:
From statement 4, the third destination was neither Patagonia nor New Zealand. Therefore, it was either Alaska or Iceland. From statement 6, the trip to New Zealand was not planned to be the first or the fourth destination. From statement 2, the trip to Iceland was planned for the year
before the trip to Alaska. Therefore, the first trip must have been planned for Patagonia; the second trip, New Zealand, the third trip, Iceland, and the fourth trip, Alaska.

From statement 2, Andy’s favourite destination was not Alaska (which , from statement 6, was Crowley’s favourite). Therefore, Andy is Whelan and
Bill is Crowley.

Summary Solutions:

Andy Whelan Iceland third
Bill Crowley Alaska fourth
Carl Barrott Patagonia first
Dennis Cole New Zealand second

Hint--put this solution together with the puzzle to see how it all ties in.
It sounds complicated at first, but you can solve it with a bit of time!

I’ll post a new puzzle tomorrow!
I hope this all worked out on my blog--the copy paste stuff!!

SOME SAD NEWS FOR US.

Irma Johnson has just died. She was Phil's wife, Roy's old partner. She has had very bad arthritis for years and was unable to do much at all. Greg phoned us this afternoon and told us the sad news.
Greg will be conducting the funeral service which is on Monday at 2 p.m. Roy is going to go over on Saturday for a brief visit. Irma was a wonderful artist and has had many of her drawings published in the form of stone lithographs. She had an MRI scan just before Christmas but no sign of a stroke at that time, in fact, on Christmas Day she started to feel a lot better, less pain, but she still couldn't talk much. She will be missed greatly by Phil, her family and friends
I went to a couple of art courses that she taught in oil painting, she was a good teacher.

I will post more later.

BLACKBEARD INFO!

BEAUFORT, N.C. -- 'Work," proclaims a T-shirt in a store in Beaufort, "is for people who don't know how to PLUNDER!" This North Carolina town loves piracy, and especially the legacy of Edward Teach (better known as Blackbeard).

Pronounced "Boh-fort," the seaside community should not to be confused with South Carolina's Beaufort, which is pronounced "Bew-ford." It is a favourite stop for snowbird sailors like myself, who are moseying south down the IntraCoastal Waterway, the protected inland passage that runs nearly 1,800 kilometres from Norfolk to Miami. Beaufort's ocean inlet also provides safe access to the open sea for skippers who have taken the ICW to avoid the notorious shoals off Cape Hatteras, but are now bound offshore on direct passages to and from the Bahamas and the Caribbean. Every spring and fall, cruising boats stream through Beaufort. Its casual, low-rise downtown is full of gift stores, bookshops, galleries, restaurants and coffee houses -- including two Internet cafés.

Though the waterfront of this nautical town is equally accessible to landlubbers, it is particularly well prepared for cruising sailors. Blackbeard himself seems to have recognized this back in the 18th century. Indeed, the legendary pirate's home -- Hammock House, built in 1709 -- is the oldest in town, and is included in "Ghost Walks" held each evening.

In 1996, the reputed wreck of his ship was discovered lying in eight metres of water near town, though its discoverers wouldn't reveal the exact location. But the ship's bell and other artifacts are displayed at the North Carolina Maritime Museum on Front Street in Beaufort.

Blackbeard's mastery of the arts of image and spin created the popular archetype of pirates and piracy. He was no slouch in battle -- his ships once blockaded the port of Charleston, and he was capable of defeating a Royal Navy ship one on one -- but he deliberately cultivated a terrifying image, twisting his huge black beard into braids, and setting a length of slow fuse afire at each side of his face when he leapt aboard the ships he pillaged. His fearsome reputation induced most skippers to surrender without a fight. His favoured hideout was the intricate, treacherous Carolina coast, where his pursuers could rarely find him. The coast consists of a long arc of sandy barrier islands known as the Outer Banks -- sweeping kilometres of beaches, fronting directly on the ocean, with broad, shallow sounds behind them.

Beaufort lies near the southern end of the Outer Banks, and so the region is a beach-lover's delight. Shackleford Banks, part of the Cape Lookout National Seashore, is one of the world's finest barrier island beaches. Its wild ponies are famous -- and the island lies only a few kilometres from Beaufort. You can take a tour boat out there, or rent a kayak and paddle out yourself.

In fact, you can even see wild horses from downtown Beaufort. My boat, Magnus, was tied up at the Town Docks. I was delighted one morning to see half a dozen dolphins off the end of the dock, their dorsal fins gracefully rising and slipping away as they browsed for food. Beyond the dolphins lay Carrot Island, near enough that a middling swimmer could reach it. That day, I talked to some local people who mentioned that Carrot Island also has a herd of 50-odd wild horses. Walking down the dock that afternoon, I scanned the island -- and sure enough, five tawny horses were meandering along the beach.

Beaufort wears its history lightly, although almost every house downtown seems to bear a plaque giving its name and date. Most were constructed in the 18th and 19th centuries. The stately houses facing the harbour along Front Street are particularly elegant, and many of them have been converted to inns.

And that salty, bloody history is always there. In his late 30s, Blackbeard retired from piracy and managed to obtain a royal pardon from the governor of North Carolina, though the governor was rumoured to be in cahoots with him.

In 1718, however, the governor of Virginia -- no friend to his counterpart in North Carolina -- organized two British naval vessels to find and capture Blackbeard. They cornered him about 80 kilometres from Beaufort, at Okracoke Inlet. The arch-pirate took 20 sword cuts and five pistol bullets before he died. His severed head was hung from the bowsprit of the naval sloop Pearl, and later exhibited at the entrance to the Hampton River in Virginia.

Carolina folk tales say Blackbeard's headless ghost wanders the coast on stormy nights, sometimes exhibiting a mysterious light, howling and searching for his head.

That wild sound I heard as I lay in my berth was the trumpeting of a wild stallion, surely. Wasn't it?

RED HAT LADY AND SNOW WONDERLAND!

RedHatCarol.jpg
Today has been an interesting day!
First of all, we had a tasty breakfast at Kupper's for the R.T.O. ( The Retired Teachers' Association). Then home to change for the Red Hat Ladies' group for lunch at Penny's! As you can see me in all my red hat glory above!
After that the majority of the women went over to Patricia Gardens and sang for the seniors.Sang?!!.Anyway, we all had books with the words in for the songs We had to stand up at the front after and sing 4 songs facing them! What an experience! We were all kind of nervous, but to see the joy in their faces made it so worthwhile. Several of the seniors said they hoped we would come back again.
After I walked to the library where Roy was waiting for me --what really horrible weather! It was blowing and snowy and icy--very slippery to walk!
oodlesofsnow.jpg
We have had more snow this year so far than the total for last year's snowfall.

Well, time to stop for a short break and do some washing!

40 BELOW WIND CHILLS!!

Continuous very cold weather this past 2 weeks--temps of below 25 and 30 plus wind chills! Just unreal! And horrible! I've been trying to stay in whenever possible!

We've had so many birds at the feeder--lots of Pine Grosbeaks and Evening Grosbeaks, plus Redpolls and Chickadees. The poor little things are just burning up their food trying to keep warm. Some of the grosbeaks even had frost on their heads yesterday!

This weekend the Manitoba Theatre Centre will be coming up to do a play, so we are looking forward to that!

Tomorrow morning we are going to the retired teachers' monthly meeting. They usually have a lunch but this month it will be a breakfast at Kupper's. The new owners seem to be doing OK. Rosemary sold out last year and she and Peter moved to Regina, their son lives there. Everyone misses them, but I think they had reached the stage when they needed to hang up their shingles!

At lunch time tomorrow, I have another meeting--The Red Hat Society! It is a group of women who meet once a month and have fun and food! We will go after to the Patricia Gardens Senior centre and have a sing-along for the oldsters! The society is based on a poem "When I am an old lady, I shall wear purple....." I will tyoe it out later today. It is somewhere on my web site.

My ankles are still very sore. They are trying a new type of dressing hoping it will help. I am also back on anti-biotics. The last swab test showed 4 different kinds of bacteria growing-yuck!

Time to take a short break and fold up my washing, get my legs up for awhile.

Did anyone see "The Manchurian Candidate"--excellent movie! I saw the original years ago, I think the new version was better. We also watched "Shrek 2" the other night --it's so funny! A real keeper!

OVEN PUFFED PANCAKES!

I realized I had forgotten to give everyone a copy of this recipe, so here it is!

3 tablespoons of butter

Combine:
4 eggs
1 cup of milk
1 cup of flour
2 tablepoons of sugar
1/2 tspn. salt
1/2 tspn, grated lemon rind

Divide butter between two 9" pie plates. Place in a preheated 400 degree oven until butter is melted.
Beat rest of ingredients until smooth. Poir half of batter into each prepared pie plate. Return to oven and bake 20 to 25 mins. until puffed and golden. Remove from oven and fill centre with fresh fruit if liked, or serve with maple syrup . Cut into wedges.
You can also serve this with Citrus Sauce. I haven't tried this yet, but it sounds very good.

Citrus Sauce.
1/3 cup of sugar
1 tablespoon of cornstarch
3/4 cup of orange juice
1/2 tspn. grated lemon rind, optional
2 tbspns. lemon juice
Combine in a small saucepan until mixture thickens. Stir in 1 tbspn. butter. Serve Hot.
Makes about 1 cup.

CHERYL'S BIRTHDAY !

Yesterday was Cheryl's birthday, but she had to work and then went out for supper. We hope to see them on Sat. as there is a presy waiting here!
Garra's birthday is also this month on Jan 22nd, and Feb 5th is my brother, John's birhday, so I will send him a card. He is 10yrs younger than me, so this year he will be 60! My God! Where did all the years go? My baby bro!!

We all watched "The Bourne Supremacy" last night--it was very good --fast paced plot with lots of action and nice little twists and turns. My kind of movie!
Alan says he has bought "Troy" so I would like to watch that too
Time to quit for a bit

Another Logic Puzzle!

This is Puzzle 2B FISHING VACATION PLANS

Carl and three of his friends who are avid fishermen decided to visit four of the world's finest sport fishing locations over a period of four years. Each friend had a different favourite location, so they chose the order in which they would take the trips ny drawing the place names from a hat. Based on the statements below, what is the first name (Andy, Bill, Carl or Dennis) and surname (one is Cole) of each friend, what was the favourite fishing location of each, and what was the order in which the trips were to be taken?

First Name Surname Favourite Location Order of Trips

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

One of the statements below is false.
1 Andy and Barrott work for the same company, Bill is self-employed.

2 The Iceland trip was planned for the year before the Alaska trip, which was not Andy's favourite
destination.

3 Carl and Barrott and their wives frequently play bridge together.

4 Whelan's favourite fishing location was the third trip which was neither Patagonia nor New Zealand

5 Whelan and Cole are married, the other two are not.

6 Dennis was disappointed that his favourite destination, New Zealand, was not to be the first; Crowley's favourite destination was planned for the last trip, so he was unsympathetic.

7 Barrott's favourite destination was the first.

I will post the solution soon!
