GOODBYE, DEAR SYLVIA.

sylviainst.kitts.jpg
Our very dear friend, Sylvia, who lives in Thunder Bay, has just passed away. Both Roy and I knew her very well. She was 88yrs. old when she died and she died in her sleep--the best way to go I think.
She was still playing the piano in two bands and I know she will be sorely missed.

The picture you see was taken in St. Kitts when a group of six of us went there in the March break in 1977. We had the most wonderful week there and have a load of memories from that trip. Sylvia also came with us on a trip to Sr. Lucia when Sally, Alan and Brad went. Again, more happy times.
Sylvia and I used to be in the same class at Teachers' College as we were learning how to teach French to English speaking students. We used ro have to spend an hour at lunch time and do all the practical work and then go to different schools and practice our imperfect French!!! We had a professor who came from
Dryden--M. Duhamel, he later became a very high up person in the education field and then an M.P.
He used to roll his eyes and tease Sylvia and me for speaking french with an English accent when we first started the course!

Sylvia and I belonged to the school choir and we used ro have to practice a lot. One very cold evening there were six of us packed into Sylvia's little tiny Austin and it packed up on Oliver Road! We had to phone for a tow--what a time!

The last time we saw her was in March as Dad needed a new passport so we decided to go to Thunder Bay and renew it. We took Sylvia out for supper, we hadn't seen her for years, so now I feel very glad that we did get to see her this year.

Well, this is a very short post just to let you all know the sad news. We will sure miss our dear friend.

Love to all. Mom xoxoxo

ONE BLAZING HOT SUMMER!

carolandthermometer.jpg
Although the temperature showing is a reflection of the one on the deck, it was still over 30 that day with a very high humidity!
The foresr fire situarion has been wild. There is a blaze over 1000 hectares by Vermilion Bay and still burning out of control. Lightning is now the main cause of fires as all camp fires have been banned from the Manitoba border to Thunder Bay, in other word, the whole of Northwestern Ontario! There is no prospect of relief in sight and everyone is doing all they can to survive the heat. At first, we had all our windows wide open but then the heat got too much and we had to turn on the air-conditioning. Luckily we have a heat pump, so we can get reverse cooling ffom the lake--like a refigerator cooling our house. I'd rather have all the windows open though. Today is not bad, only 29 and all the windows are open again!

Another highlight for this year was the graduation of Megan from Grade 8! She was as proud as a peacock! Here is another picture of Megan and her sisters, Amanda and Madison.

Amanda graduated from High School this year too! One Very Big Day!! She has now finished school for this year and will be deciding what to do with her future. I didn't get any pics of Amanda as the crowd was too big but I would imagine Alan will be posting a lot of them!

Guin now has a new job and she managed to get 2 days off two weekends ago before her job started. Here's a few pics of her very brief visit!

We went to Earl's Court, a new little patio area on the corner of King and Whyte--very nicely done!

Guin sat on the wall, there is a waterfall running over the rocks there.

Both of us had the "tourist" pics taken too!

the next afternoon was a gloriously windy day. I got a ride with Guin and we went to Johnson's Beach. It was just great! The waves were almost 3 ft. high (1M.) and the wind was so full of oxygem I felt reborn!
We bumped into Cary, Cheryl Jeremy, Amanda and Mike who were all sunning themselves and swiimming and playing like great big seals in the water!!
